Are they lying?

Probably both lying; the good Christian because he's required to and that's what he's trained his mind to think (even though his body is probably thinking differently...) though as you said, you can't be certain about him, because it is possible he doesn't...The weedy friend is probably embared to reveal it in a group setting, for one reason or another.
