Man-made satellite collision- Observations?

If two satellites travelling in opposite directions (or alternately, a satellite and a similarly sized piece of space junk/debris) collided head on, what would it appear like to us on Earth on a dark, clear night? Would we simply see two red flashing dots converging quickly on each other then a small flash or something else?
