Boiler question?

boiler wasnt working for a while, had a little oile but oil burner wouldnt stay running. had filter & other parts replaced. when i turn the oil burner on now is has some smoke coming out. is this normal due to the fact that it wasnt running for a while? i dont want the neighbors to think the house is on fire due to the smoke from the chimney
